Technology: How much does a Developer need?

Green Screen with code

First you had HTML and JavaScript. (at least when I started) Then along came CSS and jQuery. Those were the “Good Old Days” right?

Now we have to contend with Client-Side, Server-Side, Cloud and other technologies.

Then you have the languages; PHP, Python, C#, F#, SASS, Go, Object C, Angular, React there’s a new one everyday.  Not to mention the frameworks.  Have we lost our sanity? Is this all there is?

It seems the more we “advance” the less productive we are.  To be a “full-stack” web developer in today’s job market doesn’t really mean anything.  You have “full-stack” JavaScript developers who know Angular or React and maybe Node.js.  “Full-stack” Microsoft developers with C#, VB.NET, Typescript and Azure.

In every job application I’ve seen lately there is so much jargon and “HR Speak” that you don’t have any idea what the job is actually about.  The next time that I hear “Develop and implement software solutions that will empower the users as well as boost the overall operational efficiencies” I think I’ll scream.

All this technology is great (maybe) but what good does it do for the person looking at the application.  We love technology sure, but dos what we’re programming actually help somebody get their job done?

Doe it really matter if I built a site on WordPress or PHP/Laravel if they accomplish the same thing with similar performance?  Shouldn’t our goal be the client experience?

I know I ask a lot of questions and honestly, I don’t have any real answers.  I think the best thing to do is to find the simplest solution and go with it.  After all technology for technologies sake benefits no one.

If you’ve got good suggestions comment.  That’s what this blog is here for.  Thanks and see you soon!
